As sure as the leaves in New England turn into a technicolor display every Fall, so too can you expect the month of November to usher in a wave of mustaches. Some are robust and luxurious, some are…less so, but nonetheless the men (and women) of Movember raise money for prostate cancer through the itchiest display of all – an all out mustache grow-a-thon.
If you aren’t familiar with Movember it’s a uniquely engaging tradition: starting with just 30 growers in 2003 with over 1.1 million last year, Movember encourages “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas” to cultivate their best mustache (real or fake) for the 31 days of November to help “change the face of men’s health.” You can read (a lot) more at movember.com.
This year, along with many NHL teams (including Boston’s own Bruins) and the owner of the best mustache on prime time, Nick Offerman from Parks and Recreation, several members of TheCR Network are also growing: Patrick Hellen, John Refford and Mike Pace. You can check out their sweet mustaches here:
For us Movember isn’t just a fun-to-watch global movement, it’s an amazing example of the power of community. Way back in 2010 Adam Garone, the founder of the #movember movement, sat down with our members to discuss engagement and how they grew a local community to a global phenomenon. His main highlights included:
- The number one reason behind the success of Movember is the fact that it is fun and simple.
- #2? The sense of community fosters competition and energizes teams with the rivalry that results from comparing mustaches and funds raised, etc.
- Participants who take the time to personalize their donation page receive six times the amount than members who don’t. It comes back to that sense of trust. People donate to people they know and trust.
Chatting with Adam was a great treat – getting to see community superstars in action and chat about community building is a huge benefit for members of TheCR Network. For members the full Roundtable report from Adam’s call is available in the Network. If you’d like to learn more about how to become a member and access exclusive content please let us know!
Happy growing to all the Mo Bros and Sistas around the globe. I’ll be here with my fake mustache cheering you on!
