By Shannon DiGregorio Abram, Relationship Manager at The Community Roundtable.
This week we shared another exclusive peek at early Community Manager Salary Survey results. Over 250 community professionals worldwide have taken the survey, and with just two weeks left to collect data (the survey closes on 8/29) the final push is on! Please consider sharing the survey with anyone you know that works with communities – they might be a community manager, a director of community or marketing or even a digital strategist or consultant. The more data we collect the more comprehensive and valuable our results will be.

Here is some of the content that has our attention this week:
3 Qualities to Look For When Hiring Junior Community Managers – Over the course of the last year or so, I’ve been thinking a lot about hiring junior community managers for our team, particularly in entry-level roles. At the Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard University, we’ve partnered with organizations like the Global Health Corps and Northeastern University’s co-op program to provide opportunities for young people looking to gain work experience in community management, marketing, and of course, global health.
Community Manager Salary Survey Sneak Preview, Part Two – Quick preview of early results:
- Almost 40 percent of directors of community were approached directly by the hiring manager/team about their role. Another 20 percent defined and moved into this role.
- Over half of directors of community have been promoted in their community management role in their organization.
Online collaboration: Scientists and the social network – Giant academic social networks have taken off to a degree that no one expected even a few years ago. A Nature survey explores why.
The Delicate Dance Between Community And Marketing – Earlier in my career, I’d often considered myself a community purist, with views of community as a bottom-up movement, and how it shouldn’t be “tainted” by corporate top-down, rigid disciplines. Of course, it’s a bit more complicated than that, and having worked in community for different companies and in different departments, I updated my perspective on how community works with all these various disciplines. Here, I want to discuss marketing.
How can I be a more productive community manager? – Being more productive isn’t a task you can add to your list – it requires a change in your work habits. We spend a lot of time at TheCR talking about the power of forming habits – and how hard that can be for even the most disciplined person.
