Our logo confuses a lot of people – what do knights and horses have to do with community management? When we originally conceived of The Community Roundtable and the community managers we wanted to serve, the resemblance to Sir Robin in Monty Python and the Holy Grail was striking:
To us the resemblances are many. Like Sir Robin, community managers:
- Are often misunderstood by the people around them
- Need to recruit a loyal band of supporters in order to be successful
- Have to be optimists and believe they can succeed in the face of many hurdles
- Are typically somewhat naive (they must be to take it on) about all the different fights they will encounter
- Often have insufficient tools and resources to do the job (coconuts instead of horses)
- Absolutely cannot take themselves or others too seriously in order to survive
So when we thought about a logo, the idea of waving a flag atop a horse and charging into an unknown future made a lot of sense. At least it does to us. We’ve come a long way in three years and luckily community programs are growing but I think the metaphor still holds.
What best symbolically represents community management to you?
