TheCR Network Sneak Peek: November 2015

November 25, 2015 By Hillary Boucher

By Hillary Boucher, Community Manager at The Community Roundtable

Are you feeling grateful? I am feeling immensely grateful for the community superstars I get to work with every day inside TheCR Network.

Here’s a sneak peek into what’s been going on inside TheCR Network this past month:

  • NEW NETWORK LAUNCH! (Milestone) What did we do in November? We invited our members into our brand new, shiny platform with all the bells and whistles. We’ve been working on this for the better part of 2015 and it was so exciting to finally bring in our members. We’re very happy with how smooth the launch went and it’s fun to see our members take advantage of the new platform capabilities.
  • Letting Go of the Reins: Bringing a New Community Manager into Your Community (Member Call): You are a solo practitioner who has built your community with tears, sweat and blood. You’ve done such a great job that you have secured the the resources to hire a new community manager so you can work more strategically. That was the scenario for this member call and we had three teams on a panel to discuss best practices from the perspective of both the hiring manager and the new community manager. It was a stellar conversation and I look forward to archiving the reports in the member library.
  • Gamification Study Group (Concentrated learning experience): After working with Jeff Merrell from Northwestern’s Masters in Learning & Organizational Change Program we have been thinking about designing a learning experience for members to encourage an optimal learning experience on a specific topic. We know that gamification is a hot topic for practitioners and we knew folks were signing up for the Coursera course with Kevin Werbach so we designed a study group encouraging interested members to take the course with the support of  TheCR study group. We have active discussions around lessons and homework in the forums and an open office hours session in Slack every Friday afternoon. It’s been great and we’re just a few week’s in.

Those are my big highlights for the month, but there’s not enough room to tell you about our active work out loud threads, discussions and other programs. If you are interested I hope you’ll join us!

Want to access our programming for the benefit of your community work? Reach out and ask us about membership.

Time to #thankitforward – Looking Back and Giving Thanks

November 24, 2015 By Jim Storer

By Shannon Abram, Relationship Manager at The Community Roundtable.

snoopygratefulWe’re on our third year championing the idea of #thankitforward here on TheCR blog and in TheCR Network. This is our official kick off to our third year of looking back and giving thanks to those that helped us work, grow and thrive in the past year!

In the spirit of reflection and gratitude we encourage you to look back at 2015 and identify three (or more!) people who made a difference in your work and life this past year and send them a thank you via email, snail mail, or Twitter, snapchat, vine, flashmob or whatever medium works best for you.

Think about:

  • Who inspired you? Brought on a “aha moment”?
  • Who was unwavering in their support of your work?
  • Which exec made a difference with their sponsorship or participation?
  • Which community member or advocate showed up in a big way?
  • Who covered you so you could unplug for a vacation — whether a day or a week?
  • Who talked you through a tough situation?
  • Whose blog posts or Twitter handle kept you well informed? Or laughing!

You get the idea! We’d love if you tag any social thanks #thankitforward so we can see the gratitude spread. Of course – some thanks yous are private and we 100% encourage those as well. Our goal is to inspire reflection on your journey this past year, and help identify those that helped make it possible.

So tell us. Who will you be thanking it forward to this year? We’ll be sharing our #thankitforward posts over the next three weeks and we can’t wait to see yours!

Best Practices for New Member Leadership Programs

November 17, 2015 By Jim Storer

Every online community – internal (employee community) and external (custom community) – has a handful of dedicated members who contribute more than the rest. Whether you have a formal superuser, advocacy, or membership leadership program, or informally track and interact with these members, now is a great time to show them some love.

Different communities call these super users different things, including community advocates, community leaders, power users, and more.

5 Ways to Show Super Users Love in Your Online Community:

1- Swag. Everyone loves free stuff, and it doesn’t have to be an expensive investment. A hand-written note and some stickers go a long way with your superusers.

2- Shout-Outs. Highlight these members in the online community with a quick mention. Feeling seen and appreciated by online community managers makes super users feel valued.

3- Online Badges. If your online community uses badges, create a special badge to identify your superusers. This will also highlight your superusers as a resource to new members who may not understand how to engage when they join your online community.

4- Personally thank active contributors. It seems simple, but it helps increase member satisfaction.

5- Give them a sneak peek at an upcoming program, feature, or initiative. You’ll get valuable feedback and your superusers will love feeling like they got a behind-the-scenes look at something before everyone else does.

Want more ideas for launching superuser (aka leadership) programs in your community?

Community Rules of Engagement

November 2, 2015 By Jim Storer

By Shannon Abram, Relationship Manager at The Community Roundtable.TheCRNetwork_MondayLaunch_Image

Today is a very exciting day – TheCR Network moved to a new home. After years on the same platform our dedicated community team spent the last few months packing up the old Network, and spiffing up our new home. I know I’m biased, but I have to say – it’s lovely. Shiny, new and highly functional!

I wanted to share our community rules of engagement, because I think our community team did an amazing job of highlighting the behavior we encourage and explaining the behavior that is unacceptable to us. We are firm believers in both communication and modeling, and I think these rules paint a clear picture of the type of community we are trying to create, together.

I’d love to hear about community engagement guidelines you’ve shared with your members – please share!

TheCR Network Rules of Engagement

Every community has a culture and we feel pretty strongly about the things we encourage and the things we discourage – and they all stem from our core values:

Supportive. Fun. Respectful. Trustworthy. Transparent. Challenging.

Things we encourage and support . . .

Sharing. We want to know what you are working on, thinking about, reading or discussing. Seriously – if it’s about your work and it’s on your mind, it’s interesting to us!

Questions. We don’t think that there is any community question that is too obvious to ask. Often the simplest question is the most profound. Questions are triggers for others to share what they know – which they might not realize they know. If there is something you are curious about, pondering, don’t understand or what to hear from a peer – ask!

Ideas. Ideas are great things. Sometimes they spark intense conversations and actions. Sometime they fall flat. You never know until you share them. Go for it!

Support. Life in general and the work our members do specifically is hard. Community leaders often bear the brunt of people’s emotions, inconsistent policies and organizational mistakes. That can leave you exhausted. Additionally, because community management is an emerging discipline there is a high need to learn and we are all fumbling in certain areas. We are here to support you and we encourage you to support each other. So let someone know you appreciate them, their ideas or perspectives. That peer validation means the world to people.

Challenges. We grow and learn and do our best when people challenge us to do so – in supportive ways. That may mean sharing a difference of opinion or experience. That may mean encouraging someone to do better because they can. That may be disagreeing – respectfully – with their ideas.  You can do this in a supportive, comfortable way by prefacing an opinion with ‘In my experience…’ or ‘…  has worked well for me’ or ‘I feel like…’ which leaves room for others to have different points of view.

Participation, input and feedback. Don’t see that great blog post about strategy that you’re looking for? Think the community needs more case studies? Well don’t just stare… make it happen! While we may be the hosts of this party we are by no means the sole arbiters of what gets discussed and presented. If you feel strongly about something . . . do something about it.

Things we will discourage . . .

Attacks. We have a low tolerance for attacking or singling out people by name for criticism (whether community members or not). We’ll give you two strikes for this type of thing and then, goodbye. While we encourage challenging each other, that is best done from a supportive vs critical position.

Pitches. There can be a fine line between helping someone answer a question and pitching them on a solution, but we can all tell an obvious pitch when we see one. Don’t do it. This is a place about exploring, finding information, and understanding options.

Violating Trust. This is a private community and as such, the members have an expectation of privacy. The content and discussions within the community are intended to be kept within the community. If you would like to use someone’s case study or comments, please ask first. The Community Roundtable does summarize and anonymize the content of roundtable calls and may use that for market research products (which help support the community). If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact us directly.

Naming Names. We are here to discuss challenges and how to overcome them. To describe the challenge, it is not necessary to call out individuals involved by name. It’s bad form and typically people have valid reasons for their positions, even if it makes your job harder – so don’t expose all the identifying details, others can help you solve the problem without knowing all the gory details.

TheCR Network Sneak Peek: October 2015

October 28, 2015 By Hillary Boucher

By Hillary Boucher, Community Manager at The Community Roundtable

If you ever want time to fly by simply plan a community migration — you’ll be wondering what the heck happened to the last few weeks and months. While we prep behind the scenes to launch TheCR Network on a new, shiny community platform our members have been busy learning and working together inside the current community.

Here’s a sneak peek into what’s been going on inside TheCR Network this past month:

  • 10 Fundamentals That Transcend All Community Use Cases (Member Call): We had the talented and charming Lisa Bidder (Lithium) to share her take on fundamentals that are necessary and work in every community use case. It was a very popular call and one of the most popular take-aways was the importance of defining the shared value of the community for its members and the organization.
  • Peer to Peer Coaching Programs: How Social Learning Builds Thriving Workplace Communities (Member Call): Phil LeNir of Coaching Ourselves came in to share how peer to peer coaching models encourages learning and productivity in the company. He had some fascinating stats from a company that has implemented the peer to peer model and tracked the results.
  • Work Out Loud: Every week we host a “working out loud” thread for members to share their top priorities for the week and this past month our WOL threads were on fire! Members followed up with each other asking for shared resources based on what they shared and we were able to connect members with people and resources that support their work. Winning!

September 28, 2015 By Jim Storer

By Georgina Cannie, Community Fellow at The Community Roundtable

One of the most exciting and valuable aspects of TheCR Network is the regular Roundtable calls we organize for members. It goes without saying that we love to boast about the amazing roster of guest speakers we host. Most recently, we have had the honor of partnering with:

Keeley and Jeff shared their talents with TheCR Network members by leading a tandem Roundtable call on a The Inextricable Link Between Communities and Learning. In addition to being community experts, Keeley and Jeff are Champions of TheCR Network. Learn more about how our members benefit from the Champion program here.

Maria Varmazis is a Community Manager for Rapid7. She has an extensive MariaVarmazisbackground in content creation & development, corporate storytelling, and social media strategy. TheCR Network Sneak Peek: September 2015

September 24, 2015 By Jim Storer

By Georgina Cannie, Community Fellow at The Community Roundtable.

Despite my best efforts to cling to summer temperatures, to seems that Fall has arrived in full force. While I might be feeling a little reluctant to pull out my boots and scarves from the closet, I am more excited than to welcome TheCR Network members back from their summer vacations with a new wave of Network going-ons.

Here’s a sneak peek into what’s been going on inside TheCR Network

Community Careers and Compensation (Research): While this research (and the survey that fuels it) are public, we offered TheCR Network members the opportunity to collaborate on the second installment of what was formerly know as the Community Manager Salary Survey. Members met to help shape everything from the skills that should be included to what kind of tone and orientation would make the research most valuable to them when advocating for their role. Members even chimed in to help us brainstorm and vote on a new name!
Fall Programming (Events): Now that the kids are back in school and community professionals are looking towards 2016, we have launched a new line up of expert and member led Roundtable events. We are looking at Maximizing the Impact of a Small Community Team, “Socializing” your Executives and translating the 2015 State of Community Management research findings into tactical action plans- to name just a few.
Gamification Learning Group (Collaborative Learning): A handful of members have decided to take a Coursera-hosted training course on Gamification. They teamed up in TheCR Network to discuss their learning goals, support each other’s progress and trade insights.
