We’re looking for a Community Coordinator to help us better serve our members, more than 10,000 public garden professionals across a variety of disciplines. As Community Coordinator, you will work to foster inclusive online and in-person experiences for professional communities ranging in topics from Horticulture, Greenhouse & Facilities to Marketing & Communications.
You will report to the Associate Director of Professional Development and work closely with all APGA staff. Please note that APGA is a fully remote organization with staff based around the U.S. You will serve as a key liaison to our members and enable them to more easily network, learn, and grow together. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, be excited by the opportunity to expand and maintain a diverse, active community of public garden professionals, and be committed to increasing equity and access to resources needed by public gardens and professionals at all levels.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Build and manage active, diverse, and inclusive communities
- Support the expansion and day-to-day operations of APGA’s professional communities
- Stay informed of the needs and motivations of current and prospective members
- Develop content and programming that speaks to the needs and interests of community members to drive engagement
- Leverage metrics to assess community impact and engagement
- Participate in community discussions; forge connections between existing members and sources of knowledge
- Maintain existing scaffolding but develop new processes to support member participation when necessary
- Moderate and maintain community knowledge-sharing platforms; learn and adapt to new digital tools and platforms to optimize participation
- Serve as the point of contact to the Council of Communities leadership
- Maintain communication with community leaders to coordinate and host events aimed at catalyzing community participation
- Coordinate logistics and planning for community-specific symposia (virtual and in-person); National travel to support symposia may be required (10%)
- Represent communities internally and externally, sharing knowledge about community activities
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participation in weekly staff meetings
- Attendance at professional development, training, and other team building activities
- Other duties as assigned, including contribution to additional projects to support the broader efforts of the APGA team
Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience working in membership organizations, professional associations, community engagement, or volunteer management; specific success in community management preferred
- Willingness to learn digital platforms and repositories; familiarity with Teams, Tradewing, iMIS, Zoom, JotForm, preferred
- Action-oriented, agile, and a proven team advocate with the ability to balance short-term deadlines with multi-year priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across multiple mediums (e.g., presentations, status updates, reports, etc.) with a sensitivity to the needs of different audiences and contexts
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of cultivating trust through active listening and responsive dialogue
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to prioritize time and work in a remote environment
Additional Information
This position will operate remotely; the employee’s home address will be used as their official work location for tax and benefit purposes. This position may require the employee to undergo appropriate background checks as a condition of employment. This role will require travel to national events which may take place multiple times throughout the year. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be requested to lift up to 35 pounds.
