3 Community Trends We Noticed in 2022

December 26, 2022 By Jim Storer

We won’t give you another version of Spotify wrapped, but this is the time of year where one can’t help but reflect on what occurred in yet another historic year. What we’d like to share with you today are three community trends that we most look forward to exploring more of next year.

Community trend 1: Critical characteristics for community management

Teams are shifting, as are Community professionals. This year felt like the year of the year of extremes. In some cases the pandemic has highlighted the importance of Community in an organization. With that we’ve seen more C-Suite support and growing budgets. However, we can’t ignore the large layoffs in tech earlier this year and how that has real downstream effects on Community folks. We’ve seen a lot of folks make some big pivots this year. In some cases they are suddenly becoming team builders and people managers. In others, they are having to scramble and switch to an entirely new organization. That said, Community continues to trend towards becoming its own vertical. We’ve anecdotally seen more members looking for support on building teams. Contrasted to the last decade of Community Managers working as primarily solo practitioners, we count that as progress. We noticed many of these trends in 2021. They’ve only continued in 2022. Check out the State of Community Management 2022 for more.

Looking to brush up any of your community skills? Visit TheCR Academy to see our entire course catalog. Remember, complete access to all the courses is now available to all members of TheCR Network.

Trend 2: Say goodbye to the “90-9-1” rule

Gone are the days of the 90-9-1 ruling community management and social media (a.k.a. Participation inequality: 90% of participants are unengaged/inactive, 9% engage a little, 1% make up the majority of the content creation and engagement), and we have the research to back it up: the State of Community Management 2022. Instead, we would like to introduce you to the 20-25-55 rule.

  • 20% of your members are actively creating content
  • 25% are validating and consuming content (you may have heard them referred to as “lurkers,” but we find the term “learners” to be much more accurate in this context)
  • 55% are inactive

Here in the Network, we have explored a model that dives into the strengths of digital fatigue; by breaking out less formal programming, we try to get members the value that most matters to them. Many of our peers expressed similar fatigue in their Communities- members want to connect and engage but also have competing needs for their attention. Even with digital fatigue, which we associate with the pandemic, we continue to see folks adopting remote opportunities to connect with their peers.

Community trend 3: The only consistent thing is change

The headline story this year in Community was about the unpredictability in the job market, with places like Meta and Twitter having record layoffs and restructuring. We saw this same trend across tech. A very illustrative visual courtesy of TrueUp.

Community is not immune to the changing landscape nor the continued whispers of a recession. No single post can encapsulate all that we can and want to say about those changes, however, we saw a number of our members pivot from unfavorable company dynamics and into better roles.

That shift and resulting uncertainty can be a trying time in anyone’s life. We recently hosted a panel about transitioning to new roles and the insights were invaluable.

Roundtable Call – When Growing Your Career Means Leaving your Community

A few gems from the call:

  • Look beyond a title, and think holistically about what you want in a role.
  • Another was around managing burnout. The panelists expressed how important it is to be analytical. And to be critical about what you actually want next rather than being in a reactionary state of being burned out.
  • Focus on what you are running towards rather than what you’re running from. Where are your skills best applied?

As an offer to any reader who may be impacted by an unexpected job shift, we are currently offering our community fundamentals course for free. To take advantage of the program and possibly add to your community skills toolbox, send us a message and we’ll be happy to help you get started.

2022 was another year for the books and the Network. We appreciate all of you that have shown up, shared your thoughts, and hopefully learned alongside us at TheCR. We hope you have a restful, peaceful break and will see you in 2023.

The NEW Community Manager Handbook

May 19, 2022 By Jim Storer

The NEW Community Manager Handbook started as a series of twenty-one interviews with community leaders from organizations like Analog Devices, Inc, Easterseals, Microsoft, PTC Software, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, the World Bank Group, and many more.

The conversations, led by Anne Mbugua, were amazing.

Anne is an incredible interviewer, by which I really mean she is an amazing listener. Playing the recordings back we realized they need to be more than podcasts – and ta-da, the NEW Community Manager Handbook was born.

When we published the first Community Manager Handbook in 2015 the community space, and the world looked really different. Not many people worked from home regularly. The technology landscape was really different. The world wasn’t sold on the idea of asynchronous learning or collaboration.

And, frankly, there was not enough emphasis on the importance of things like accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion in both community spaces and overall organizational awareness.

When you download The NEW Community Manager Handbook you’ll explore meaningful community management topics with 21 passionate community builders.

Inside The NEW Community Manager Handbook you’ll hear from:

  • Jephtah Abu on getting started in community management
  • Ashleigh Brookshaw on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Lisa Allison on choosing a community platform
  • Jaime Lee Bunton on stakeholder support
  • Melanie Binder on professional development
  • Catherine Hackney on member onboarding
  • Alex Blanton on virtual events
  • Debbie Kwan on community migrations
  • Mary Lightfoot on accessibility
  • Rachael Silvano on community operations
  • Tracy Maurer on building advocacy programs
  • Janet Stiles on unclogging bottlenecks
  • Anne Mbugua on creating meaningful content
  • Lisa Tallman on building community teams
  • Neil Morgan on defining the digital workplace
  • Claudia Teixeira on centers of excellence
  • Sarah Rapp on ambassador programs

Meet TheCR Network Scholars | Terri O’Neal

June 22, 2021 By Jim Storer

As part of our continuing efforts to increase the impact of our community resources, we are excited to introduce you to the 2021 Scholarship Cohort. Each month in 2021 we’ll interview a cohort scholar and learn why community is important to them.

This month we’ll meet Terri O’Neal, Community Engagement Coordinator with Life Remodeled, a Detroit, MI neighborhood development nonprofit.

Why do you believe in community management?

I come from invested and resourceful community work. My grandparents were active members of a resilient group of people. That investment was passed down to my parents, avid public servants, who instilled in me the value of serving my community. My youth extracurricular activities included school beautification projects, volunteering with neighborhood and faith-based groups, and participating in community cultural art initiatives. Throughout my life and career, I have strived to uphold my grandparents and my parents legacy for making their community a better place.

Furthermore, I remain inspired by resilient communities – ones that unify to press on in the face of adversity.

The power of community is bringing people from diverse backgrounds together for a common goal to create a better, more just world. As a community advocate, I work with primarily BIPOC neighborhoods that have experienced long-term disinvestment that require a significantly greater investment of time, understanding, persistence, and creativity to revive. I am proud to be helping so many people get the resources they need, especially during such a difficult time. I love meeting and collaborating with different people every day. I also love learning from people with such interesting lives.

What area of Community Management are you most interested in learning about?

I want to grow in the areas of engagement and strategy. My engagement would benefit from Moderation & Conflict Facilitation, and Member Advocacy & Support. Also, training in strategies such as Overall & Engagement, Strategy Development and Benchmarking, and Reporting will help in creating collaborative neighborhood action plans and partnerships.

Tell us about your current community role!

I serve as the Community Engagement Coordinator with Life Remodeled, a Detroit, MI neighborhood development nonprofit. In my role, I contribute to bridging people across opportunity divides through transformative experiences. I work with a team of staff, key community volunteers, residents, neighborhood block-clubs and collectives, and other local stakeholders to engage people in projects and programming at the Durfee Innovation Society, a local opportunity hub.

In addition, I facilitate events, communicate relevant resources, and solicit feedback to cultivate meaningful and sustainable community partnerships. Through creative problem-solving and intentional revitalization strategies, I help find impactful solutions to connect people with quality resources and opportunities that inspire radical change and hope in resilient communities.

I have worked in the community space in many capacities. I have experience as a community theater associate, community-based participatory researcher, organizer, block-club leader, volunteer, youth engagement coordinator, community event planner, community liaison, and community specialist.

Thanks, Terri! Watch this space for updates from Hannah and our other 2021 Scholarship Cohort members.

Meet TheCR Network Scholars | Hannah Friedman

May 24, 2021 By Jim Storer

As part of our continuing efforts to increase the impact of our community resources, we are excited to introduce you to the 2021 Scholarship Cohort. Each month in 2021 we’ll interview a cohort scholar and learn why community is important to them.

This month we’ll meet Hannah Freidman, Manager of Learning and Community for Intronix Technologies.

Why do you believe in Community/Community Management?

I believe in Community because it can be lifesaving for some folks. You can see this when considering online health communities. People with chronic illnesses who are an active part of online health communities become more engaged in their own health care. They become self-advocates and better adhere to their treatment plans. Along with the social support they get from their peers, these benefits lead to better health outcomes.

In the case of the marginalized community that I work with at my part-time job with the HIV/AIDS Regional Services, I can see that community creates resilience. I work with people experiencing the hardest times of their life. They face loss, illness, discrimination, and many more injustices on a daily basis. However, they are always there for each other; they protect and care for one another. I truly believe that if they didn’t have their tight-knit community of peers and staff, they wouldn’t survive. As Community Managers, we’re lucky enough to facilitate this process in our own communities.

Do you have any community professionals that you look to for inspiration?

I am so inspired by the work of community management experts like Carrie Melissa Jones and Sarah Judd Welch.

What area of Community do you want to learn most about?

I’d love to learn more about Community Strategy. I feel I need most support with strategy as I am a one-person-team without resources or guidance.

Tell us more about your work at Intronix!

My current role is the Manager of Learning and Community for Intronix Technologies. Currently, our community hasn’t launched, so my role involves a lot of preparing and strategizing. I conduct secondary research and write up course content for our future members. I’ve also worked on our wordpress site, making sure it’s visually pleasing and easy to use. Once we launch in the new year, I will get to work with real-live community members (fostering engagement, creating/planning digital content, moderating, etc) – so exciting!

My part-time role of Harm Reduction Outreach Worker also incorporates community. I work directly with my clients to build relationships and support them in accessing the services they need. I often support my clients emotionally and help them to feel cared for, while sharing about myself, too, to strengthen our bonds. This can happen one-on-one or in groups.

Thanks, Hannah! Watch this space for updates from Hannah and our other 2021 Scholarship Cohort members.

Meet TheCR Network Scholars | Supranee Jaroenlerdjanya

April 21, 2021 By Jim Storer

As part of our continuing efforts to increase the impact of our community resources, we are excited to introduce you to the 2021 Scholarship Cohort. Each month in 2021 we’ll interview a cohort scholar and learn why community is important to them.

This month we’ll meet Supranee Jaroenlerdjanya, Head of Corporate Innovation at HUBBA Thailand.

Why do you believe in Community/Community Management?

I’m learning a lot from my career working as a community manager. I would say I’m who I’m now because of support from community and I totally believe in its power.

My goal is to make “Community” become an agenda in my country. This could help people understand more about the value of community that can make a good impact on our future.

What area of Community do you want to learn most about?

Business and Strategy, I’m struggle on how we can make it more sustainable and I think these 2 topics is my weakness that I want to learn more and improve.

Tell us more about your role at HUBBA Thailand!

I’ve been with HUBBA Thailand, one of the well-known local co-working spaces in Bangkok, Thailand since 2012. My current role is designing and managing a team of 10+ to be able to execute an innovation program focused on Thailand’s vibrant startup ecosystem by connecting people through activities, workshops and events.

My current role aside from coaching the community leader is to focusing on the corporate side in how we can partner and help them cultivate innovation culture and transformation by using the concept of community, our knowledge and connection during the past eight years in supporting the entrepreneurs and startups community in Thailand.

Thanks, Supranee! Watch this space for updates from Supranee and our other 2021 Scholarship Cohort members.

Meet TheCR Network Scholars | Erin Fristoe

March 23, 2021 By Jim Storer

As part of our continuing efforts to increase the impact of our community resources, we are excited to introduce you to the 2021 Scholarship Cohort. Each month in 2021 we’ll interview a cohort scholar and learn why community is important to them.

This month we’ll meet Erin Fristoe, currently the Director of Community and Talent Acquisition for a 200-person Department of Defense Contractor.

Why do you believe in Community/Community Management?

Community isn’t something that you choose to believe in or not like Santa Claus. Community is there whether you see it or not.

But not all communities are created equal- those with strong leadership (or influence) succeed. It turns out I was “community managing” long before I knew that it was a thing. I was always the person that coordinated friends gathering, or finding commonalities between strangers to have them more comfortably engage with one another. In fact, I have a LI blog post about My Accidental Community that I wrote a few years back- community managing before I was a Community Manager.

Some people are born to do it- I can’t not community manage. The innate habit of community building that lies within me is a driving factor in my life, work aside.

What area of Community do you want to learn most about?

I’ve given talks as a SME in the Community space and enjoy learning and growing, but I really desire the leadership skills to learn how to strategize for the future. As the Community SME at my company, I don’t have anyone to learn from, for instance, creating a roadmap for the community.

In my dream world, I would take the skills and thought leadership I’ve gained over the years and consult with other small start-ups in the DC area, educating them on the value of building a strong community from the start.

Are you currently working in Community?

Yes, My current role is that of Community Director. In this role, it is my responsibility to make employees sticky. My focus is driven by two fundamentals: lowering attrition and engaging high performers- the most productive members of our community tend to be the most engaged.

Thanks, Mohamed! Watch this space for updates from Mohamed and our other 2021 Scholarship Cohort.
