Introducing our Connect 2020 Track Chairs
For the last five years, we’ve run increasingly dynamic and engaging Connect conferences. Over the course of the years, there was one piece of feedback that we heard over and over – but had a hard time implementing: “We want tracks!”
Believe me, we got it. It’s a bummer to settle into a session only to realize ten minutes in that it’s just not for you. Connect has always been intentionally small, and tracks just didn’t make sense. Until now.
Connect 2020 has changed the way we can think about our content, and by moving from a two-day in-person event to a month-long community celebration, tracks now not only make sense, but they are also a heck yes.
With over 50 online sessions, we’ve reimagined what it means to Connect in 2020. To help attendees find the sessions that will be the most valuable, we have divided all activities into nine tracks. Tracks also give us the opportunity to work with Track Chairs for the first time. Each Chairperson holds deep expertise in their track, and will serve as the member voice and face for Connect 2020.
I’m thrilled to announce our 2020 Track Chairs:

Managing Job-Related Stress: Pets
Managing job-related stress is important for everyone, but for community managers, in particular, it is especially critical. 50% of community professionals report feeling burnt out by their jobs.
If burn-out rates are high, how can you take care of yourself?
We asked for advice from 25 community leaders for practicing meaningful self-care. You can find all their advice, and data about community management roles that may surprise you, taken from our Community Careers and Compensation 2020 report. You can download the full ebook here.
Three of our profiles shared that their pets help them manage job-related stress – and it’s not just anecdotal. There is a lot of scientific evidence that sharing your life with a furry, feathery, or scaley friend really does make your life better.
THE POWER OF PURRS
A cat purring is one of the most comforting sounds in the world and has been long associated with a therapeutic healing ability on human bones and muscle.
A cat’s purr creates vibrations at a frequency of 20-140 HZ, and studies have shown that frequencies in the 18-35 HZ range have a positive effect on joint mobility after an injury. Scientists have begun talking about how purrs can physically help heal humans. Read more.
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Dog owners walk 22 minutes more per day than those without four-leg workout buddies. And yes, it counts as exercise!

The Recognition Your Community Program Deserves
Every day I get to watch amazing community management professionals do exciting, innovative work. The other side of that coin is that every day I also hear stories of how their work go underappreciated, and underfunded at their organizations. The third annual TheCR Awards recognize excellence in community management, and submissions for the 2018 awards are now being accepted. Designed to recognize the best in a variety of community management categories, TheCR Connect Awards are open to members of TheCR Network and their community teams.
Submit your community programs in a variety of categories, including:
- Outstanding Community ROI
- Best Recognition + Reward Program
- Best Community Dashboard
- Outstanding Community Playbook
- Outstanding Community Change Agent
- Community MVP
In addition to the satisfaction of sharing your innovative and effective community solutions, winning one of TheCR Awards can make an impact for you and your team. Past recipients have received increased executive support, expanded budgets, and greater organizational awareness after their wins.

Happy CMAD 2018 – Community Management Advancement Day
HAPPY CMAD 2018, EVERYONE!
I’m going to be honest – CMAD is one of my favorite days of the year. While CMAD started out as Community Management Appreciation Day, we like to imagine it has evolved into something more – community management advancement day. Because really, what shows more appreciation than saying, “we see you and we want to help you get to where you want to be!”?
We started brainstorming a way to celebrate CMAD 2018 that would both highlight some of the amazing community management leaders we know and provide a tangible asset for community professionals everywhere to enjoy. Thus, CMGT 101 was born. We worked closely with 17 community leaders to get their advice on specific topics, like member retention, effective engagement, community UX and more and compiled this ebook: CMGT 101: 17 Community Leaders Share Their Secrets for Success.
We could not have published this ebook without the thoughtful contributions from:
- Lori Harrison-Smith, Steelcase
- J.J. Lovett, CA Technologies
- Aaliyah Miller, Aetna
- Patty McEnaney, Envestnet
- Monique van den Berg, Atlassian
- Jerry Green, The Community Roundtable

If you are a community professional please know that we do appreciate you, and all the work that you do every day to advance the world of community management. If you aren’t a community professional – what you are waiting for? Quick – find one and thank them!
A final shout-out to ALL the community leaders in TheCR Network – we only highlight 17 of them here, but there are hundreds more who inspire us daily and it is immensely gratifying to get to work alongside them.
Happy CMAD!
TheCR Network Year In Review 2017 Infographic
It’s the most wonderful time of year.
The candles, and the lights and the festive drinks and tasty food. And celebrating your traditions with loved ones. That is all very wonderful.
Also pretty wonderful? Getting to look back at the amazing year we had inside TheCR Network. Our members are incredibly engaged (no outdated 90-9-1 rule here!) and have collaborated on some pretty cool projects this year.
I’m excited to share our annual Year in Review infographic for 2017. I couldn’t be happier to be heading into 2018 with the dedicated community leaders in TheCR Network.
Want to leverage the resources, tools and experts in TheCR Network in the new year? Join now!
How do I thank just three people? Well, I don’t.
Every year I sit down to think about three people that have impacted my year for #thankitforward and every time it’s impossible. I am so grateful to work on a team of fun, passionate, hard-working people. It truly makes my job a joy.
And beyond that, I get to spend my days interacting with awesome community managers around the world. People how are doing innovative, amazing work to improve their organizations.
Narrowing it down is hard, but for you, I tried.
For my three:
@Hillary Boucher is the work partner you dream of. She’s fun, funny and always tells me the
truth. She pushes me to be better, at work and not at work, and I am so, so happy to have her in my life.
@Jerry Green has handled every weird thing I’ve thrown at him this year with a smile. It appears that he’s good at everything (and so tall!) and we’re so lucky he’s part of our team.
I’m going to cheat for my third one and say: every single person I’ve met in real life at events over the past year. As I mentioned, working from home can be tough (and awesome, but lonely sometimes). My favorite part of my job is meeting all of you in real life, sharing drinks, stories, crab legs, late nights, early morning, and laughs. There is no way I’ll remember everyone, but here’s a quick list:
@Lori Harrison-Smith
@Lisa Allison
@Heather Ausmus
@Cy Jervis
@Ted Hopton
@Oonagh McQuarrie
@Jennifer Erzen
@Claire Flanagan
@J.J. Lovett
@Sam Creek
@Jeff Ross
@Monica Lluis
@Peter Broadley
@Helen Chen
@Mike Pascucci
@JoAnn Scanlon
@Luke Sinclair
@Karen Brent
@Jeff Glasson
@Monique van den Berg
Ok, I’m done. If I forgot your name, I apologize – please know that you made my year better, too!
TheCR Network FAQs, or Why Should I join TheCR Network?
I field a ton of questions about TheCR Network, and while it’s easy to point people to our awesome descriptions on the site, there is a certain je ne sais quoi that is lost in a link. I sat down over the weekend and wrote up five things that make TheCR Network an unparalleled community management resource. I hope this list answers some questions you might have had.
If you have a question I didn’t answer – ask me! Seriously, tweet at me, email me or drop us a line!
1. What are Roundtable calls and how do they work?
Roundtable calls are at the heart of TheCR Network. Calls are scheduled about once a week on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday at various times to account the diverse locations and time zones of our members.
They are live video conference calls with community peers on topics pertaining to the various elements of community management and social business. Calls take various forms including case studies, working groups, peer reviews, and interactive expert presentations.
Members tell us all the time that these calls are as valuable as you make them. The more you invest your time and expertise, the more you’ll get out of the experience. We encourage our members to show up with questions and to bring their stories and experiences to the table to learn and grow your career and skill set.
We keep the vibe as fun and casual as possible while maintaining a high integrity of quality of information.
Note for Members: You can find all upcoming roundtable calls on the Events page inside the Network and we encourage you to RSVP and upate your RSVPs according to your availability. We spend time prepping the call to meet the needs of participants and it’s helpful to know who is coming.
2. I want to learn more about community analytics (or gamification, or internal adoption strategy or content management). Why is TheCR Network the best way best way to approach my interests?
If you are looking research a specific topic we have a treasure trove of high-quality resources inside TheCR Network for you. One of our goals is to help manage the firehose of information our members face on the internet. Our resources are highly-vetted, research-backed and proven to be successful.
There are literally hundreds of reports and case studies in TheCR Network Library.
Members have access to all our research, articles, and reports curated by topic tags as benefit of membership. And our special interest cohorts and working groups help members dig deep into specific topics in a collaborative way.
Another way to learn is to start a discussion around the topic you are interested in learning about. If enough members are interested in the topic we help shape the conversation into a Roundtable call. Or if there is a specific author, industry expert, or topic you would like to see on the programming calendar just give us a shout! Many of our calls are sourced directly from our members’ interests, challenges, and requests.
Note for Members: You can use the Library in the main Roundtable group to browse reports from the past 10 years of Roundtable calls with industry experts and experienced peers.
3. Where does community happen at TheCR Network?
TheCR Network’s member site is our home base. It’s where our member-only information and content lives. But the network’s best value is in its relationships and your peers live in a wider world than our network home site!
We also use Slack for more real-time conversations, and our weekly Happy Hour chats are wonderful places to make casual connections with other members, but we encourage you to take the next step. If there was a member you met on a roundtable call or in a Happy Hour chat go check out their profile, follow them on Twitter or connect on LinkedIn and continue the conversation.
And since nothing beats in-person connections we host our annual member conference- TheCR Connect every Fall in Boston.
Note for Members: Use the member directory to identify members you want to connect with and either reach out on your own or request an introduction. We do it all the time and are always happy to coordinate a meeting amongst members. Want help? Let me know who you want to connect with and I’ll make the intro!
4. Where can research, reports, & other resources help my work?
Even though it can sometimes feel like it, you are not the first person facing community management challenges. Our members have designed community surveys, built community playbooks, organized social media training programs for employees, and run community maturity gap analyses. That’s the beauty of the network – it’s full of people like you.
The resources in TheCR Network make it so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Lean on the Network and work out loud. You might be surprised at how much more efficient you can be!
And don’t forget to share your work, too. The resources mentioned above are all here for you because other members graciously made their efforts and expertise available for the rest of the network.
Note for Members: Have something you want to share? We have an easy case study template to help you share your community story back with your peers. Get in touch and we can help make it happen.
5. What is Working Out Loud and how can it help me?
It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of the work out loud concept. We believe working out loud helps you define and articulate your goals, identify challenges and find support in an organic and productive way. Every week we encourage our members to work out loud by sharing their top priorities for the week and asking the Network great questions to help them solve problems. Working out loud enables member-to-member support and collaboration and helps us connect members with resources they need to succeed.
Note for Members: Work out loud with us here.
I hope this gives you a better idea of the magic that is happening every day inside TheCR Network. I’d love to chat and answer any specific questions you have. I hope I see you inside the Network soon!
What are you waiting for – join TheCR Network now!
Do you have an award-worthy community program?
Seeing the work of hundreds of innovative and creative community professionals is one of the biggest perks of my job here at TheCR. Not a day goes by when I don’t say, “Wow – that’s awesome!” in response to something a member tells me.
Last year we launched a recognition program to acknowledge and reward the outstanding community work we see every day. I was delighted to present nine members of TheCR Network with awards that recognized their unique strengths and contributions to community management.
This year TheCR Connect awards are evolving into a more formal recognition process. Since there is no way we can stay on top of all the amazing work that our members do, we’re opening up the process and encouraging members to submit award-worthy community work in four categories: Best Design Element, Winning Welcome Wagon, Best Reward and Recognition Program and Outstanding Community ROI. An additional award – The Community MVP will be awarded by nominations from community peers.
You can learn more about each award – and more about the recognition process here. Submissions and nominations are being accepted from April 25, 201717 until June 30th, 2017 at midnight PT.
I can’t wait to see what innovative community work our members submit – and to see the peer nominations for Community MVP!
Introducing: Community Case Studies from TheCR Network
The number one request we get from community practitioners is to hear the stories of other people, facing the same challenges they are. And it’s not just anecdotal – our research has shown that while every community is different, data proves that communities with different use cases face similar challenges and use the same community management strategies, operations and tactics to achieve success.
Luckily, working with our members in TheCR Network gives us a front row seat to some amazing community stories – and now we’re going to share them with you!
I’m excited to announce our new series: Community Case Studies from TheCR Network. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our members succeed – and we want to share those successes with you. Added bonus – as our members tell their community stories they are also sharing how they achieved specific successes – and passing along best practices, research-backed tactics, and techniques you can implement in your community today. Each member success story will share their challenge, their goal and the outcome – a true insider look at how some of the world’s top organizations are implementing community programs.
We kick off the series with Getting the New Member Experience Right, a case study shared by member Camilo Lemos, Community Manager at Autodesk. Camilo outlines how the Autodesk community team took on redesigning its entire Customer Support Community, a peer-to-peer platform built over 30 years ago to support their software technology/web applications customers. Definitely, a must-read for anyone facing the redesign of an existing community or looking to improve a support community that is already up and running.
